Avowed is an upcoming fantasy RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, the developers behind The Outer Worlds and Fallout: New Vegas. The anticipated game was first unveiled in 2020, but news has been scarce about this mysterious role-playing project. It looks like that might change soon as Obsidian developers are possibly teasing its arrival at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase this weekend.
Hannah Kennedy, a concept artist at Obsidian who previously worked on The Outer Worlds, tweeted: “Man… it’s gunna be extremely cool when I can finally share what I’ve been working on for the last 2 years.” Fans immediately dismissed The Outer Worlds 2 as that title is seemingly further out from an official release.

Following Kennedy’s tweet, Obsidian designer Josh Sawyer replied with a ‘prayer’ emoji, adding further fuel to the fire. Given the timing, the most likely candidate is Avowed, which has yet to receive an official release date but we know it’s coming exclusively to Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Obsidian Entertainment is currently working on two known projects: The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed. While the studio has unveiled both, it stated that The Outer Worlds 2 was simply a title (as the reveal trailer cleverly remarked) and wasn’t close to completion. Avowed, on the other hand, is reportedly already in a semi-playable state, according to Video Games Chronicle.
In October last year, Windows Central reported that Avowed would have two-handed first-person combat similar to Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It will also reportedly feature swimming gameplay and destructible environments.
Xbox apparently mandated several of its first-party studios to have gameplay ready in time for the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, with Obsidian Entertainment presumably being one of these studios. We recommend taking this with a pinch of salt until the show later this week.
The Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase takes place on Sunday, 12 June 2022 at 7PM SAST.
