PS5 Pro PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection Release Dates Price South Africa

Official PS5 Pro Specs Confirm 16.7 TFLOPS and Added 2GB DDR5 RAM

Sony’s supercharged PS5 Pro is expected to launch this coming week but it seems a lot of people already have the console in their hands. The stock of the PS5 Pro began to arrive at retailers across the EU which has resulted in a number of leaks. The word “number” here might be underplaying it. General consumers have already been playing on their consoles, testing games, taking photos, unboxing the unit and even tearing it down.

One major leak to come out of all of this is the official specs of the PS5 Pro. Up to now, Sony hasn’t revealed much about the console’s general performance. Instead of giving us exact stats to go on, the company has simply stated that the PS5 Pro offers 40% more performance than the base PS5. However, there’s a lot more to it.

The official manual that comes bundled with the console has revealed all the specs. According to the leak, the PS5 Pro packs 16.7 TFLOPS of power, 2GB of DDR5 RAM, Wi-Fi 7 support, an extra USB-C port and the power rating for the PS5 Pro is 390W. In comparison to the base PS5, we’re looking at the following specs:

  • 16.7 TFLOPS vs 10 TFLOPS
  • 2TB SSD vs 825GB SSD
  • Added 2GB DDR5 Memory
  • Added WiFi 7 Support
  • An extra USB-C port replaces a USB-A port
  • 390W Max Power vs 350W Max Power

The new 2GB of DDR5 RAM on the PS5 Pro is likely being used for the PSSR feature which is Sony’s built-in AI upscaling tech. One thing that has been confirmed is that the PS5 Pro does not come with a full bandwidth HDMI port. The HDMI bandwidth is still capped at 32Gbps meaning you still can’t use YCbCr 422 @ 120hz on the PS5 Pro.

This feature was on our list of “features we hoped the PS5 Pro had that it likely won’t“, so it seems we were expecting too much from PlayStation.

The PS5 Pro specs show that Sony did more than just increase the console’s performance. Will it make the difference gamers are looking for? We’ll have to see what early adopters say about it as the launch arrives.

The PS5 Pro is expected to be released in South Africa on 13 December. The console was delayed in the country following regulator clearance. Pre-orders for the console are now available at retailers across SA.
