One Piece Odyssey is releasing this week. Unfortunately, the game isn’t getting a South African physical launch in the region. Nexus Hub is bringing in some physical copies which are set to arrive on 20 January. If you are interested in picking up a hard copy, you can order one on either PS4 or PS5 here. You can also try the game out before you buy it thanks to a demo now available on consoles.
According to early reviews for One Piece Odyssey, the game is one of the most ambitious and likely the best entries in the series to date. However, that doesn’t mean it is a masterpiece. Many critics mention the game’s major pacing issues which tie down the overall experience.

Other reviews have criticised the game’s overall progression and unoriginal combat system. However, outside of that, there seems to be praise all around. There are some One Piece Odyssey reviews sitting in the 9/10s while others dip as low as 6/10. These lower scores are far and few between. The majority of reviews are around 7s and 8s.
Over on OpenCritic, One Piece Odyssey is sitting at 71% and on Metacritic, the game is at 75%. One Piece Odyssey is set to launch on 13 January for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

One Piece Odyssey is a pleasant surprise and fans can finally celebrate the first great game within this inspiring universe. This kind of Dragon Quest with One Piece skin works very well although it’s an easy experience. Eiichiro Oda’s contribution results in a faithful tone to One Piece and an interesting narrative that captures the player. This is ILCA’s second game as the main studio and could be the start of a major series. Read full review
TheSixthAxis – 8/10
One Piece Odyssey is the ultimate adventure for a diehard One Piece fan. It’s touching to be able to revisit the people and places making up some of the series’ most iconic story arcs in a way that feels rich and immersive rather than skimmed through and streamlined. Some quirks in the overworld exploration and a few combat design flaws might make this a but of an unpolished RPG on paper, but if you’ve spent the last two decades with Luffy and his crew, then the shine and charm of One Piece Odyssey is undeniable. Push Square – 8/10
No matter whether you’re a hardcore One Piece fan or a complete newcomer, One Piece Odyssey is an utter joy of a JRPG. Its combat system remains incredibly enjoyable throughout, and new mechanics provide depth and strategy in droves. Most certainly the highlight of the experience, but with fun exploration to boot, you’re always assured of a good time. One Piece Odyssey plays a lot like Dragon Quest XI, and it’s not that far off being just as good as it. Read full review.
