Blizzard Entertainment has clarified how loot boxes and currencies will transfer from Overwatch to the sequel. According to the company, all unopened loot boxes will automatically be opened once you transition to Overwatch 2 and the items received from those loot boxes will be stored in your account.
Overwatch 2 will not feature any loot boxes, so it only makes sense that all unopened loot boxes from the previous game will automatically be opened once you transition to the sequel. Additionally, all credits earned in the first Overwatch will also carry over to Overwatch 2.

Speaking on a Reddit AMA recently, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller explained in a bit more detail how the transition will work. The franchise’s commercial lead, Jon Spector, also chipped in with an explanation, stating:
“We’ll share a more detailed explanation on all of these topics before Overwatch 2 goes live in October. To give you a quick answer now though, those existing currencies (credits, OWL tokens, and competitive points) will come with you into Overwatch 2.
We are not transitioning loot boxes into Overwatch 2, and ahead of launch, any unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened with your account receiving all the contents directly.
OW1 credits come with you to OW2, but our new virtual currency will be the main currency, and there will be things in OW2 that will not be purchasable with those OW1 credits.”
The last bit is quite interesting as it means that some items and cosmetics in Overwatch 2 will not be purchasable with your Overwatch 1 credits. A new currency will be in place as the game goes free-to-play in October.
In an effort to curve the free-to-play model, Blizzard Entertainment will implement a battle pass system in Overwatch 2 and remove all loot boxes. Players can then use real money to purchase cosmetics in the game. Seasonal updates will arrive every nine weeks, with the battle passes bringing new heroes, modes, maps and cosmetics.
Overwatch 2 launches on 4 October 2022 as a free-to-play title for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
