Paramount+ has officially cancelled its Halo TV show after only two seasons. Microsoft is reportedly looking for a new partner to pick up the live-action series, which has received mixed reviews from critics and fans so far for its story and character deviations from the video games.
The Halo TV show debuted its second season earlier this year and while most felt it was a step up from season 1, it failed to generate the same amount of interest among viewers. Paramount+ has now made the decision to pull the plug on the series, though 343 Industries, Amblin Television and Microsoft are apparently looking for new partners to pick up the show.
A spokesperson for Paramount+ confirmed the show’s cancellation in a recent statement:
“We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.”
343 Industries also added: “We deeply appreciate the millions of fans who propelled the Halo series to be a global success and we remain committed to broadening the Halo universe in different ways in the future. We are grateful to Amblin and Paramount for their partnership in bringing our expansive sci-fi universe to viewers around the world.”
In our first impressions of the first season, we said that the Halo series was off to a good start and had potential to explore Master Chief in a way that the video games haven’t yet. Unfortunately as the episodes rolled out, it became evident that the show wasn’t making many attempts to stick to the source material but rather deviate from it in divisive ways. The result was a loose adaptation that wasn’t quite sure which target demographic it wanted to appeal to.
