Path of Exile 2 Devs Screw South African Gamers Over With Massive Price Hike on Early Access Packs

Path of Exile 2 is set to launch on Friday in early access. The soon-to-be free-to-play game will arrive without all of its content as Grinding Gear Games continues to add to it over the next few years. If you want to jump into Path of Exile 2, you’ll need to pick up one of the Supporter Packs. These packs come with early access as well as some pretty cosmetics and in-game currency to spend on the plethora of items you would expect from a free-to-play game.

While this is usually the norm on early access games, Path of Exile 2 might be put on the burner for now after a massive price hike hit the game overnight. A few days ago, you were able to pre-order the various Supporter Packs in South Africa starting at R270. The most expensive pack was priced at R829. That has now more than doubled in price.

The base pack now costs R543 and the most expensive pack is R1,811. The strange thing about this price hike is that the Path of Exile 2 Supporter Packs were seemingly delisted and re-listed on Steam to avoid showing the price increase. If you look at the price history graph, you don’t see the cheaper listing at all. But this screenshot taken last week shows otherwise.

Path of Exile 2 Supporter Pack Price Hikes

  • Base Pack – R543.26 (Was R270)
  • Lord of Ogham Pack – R1,086.71 (Was R499)
  • King of the Faridun Pack – R1,811.30 (Was R829)

Path of Exile 2 Supporter Pack

Granted, the Path of Exile 2 Supporter Packs were priced from $30 which aligns with the “new” price on Steam. However, keep in mind that Steam does implement localization pricing that reduces the price of certain games on the platform depending on the territory. Regions with lower video game spending and weaker currencies often benefit from this system. This was originally in place in South Africa.

For example, Silent Hill 2 has localized pricing that lists the game at R579 compared to the R1299 you’ll find elsewhere. Steam has proven to be good for gamers in this regard. Path of Exile 2, on the other hand, wants gamers to pay full price. I guess it is what it is right now.

If you’re on console, the Path of Exile 2 Supporter Packs aren’t up for pre-order yet so we don’t know how much you’ll pay. But given the lack of localized pricing, you’ll likely need to fork out the “new” Steam price, if not more. I suspect these packs will start at R600+ and go over R2,000.

If you’re on Steam, you can pre-order Path of Exile 2 now ahead of the early access launch on 6 December.
