Persona 5 Royal on PS4 Can’t Be Upgraded to PS5 Version

Atlus recently announced a PS5 version of Persona 5 Royal, the critically acclaimed JRPG. However, it look like players who own the PS4 version of the game won’t be able to upgrade to the PS5 version, requiring them to purchase it again if they want the current-gen enhancements.

As reported by Video Games Chronicle, a FAQ on the game’s Japanese website reveals that there won’t be an upgrade option for PS4 owners. Atlus stated that players would need to purchase the PS5 version separately instead, which has caused a bit of backlash from the community.

“We are sorry, but there are no products for PlayStation 4 purchasers of Persona 5 Royal for this title,” said Atlus. “We would appreciate it if you could purchase Persona 5 Royal for PlayStation 5, when you play the game on PlayStation 5.”

PS4 owners will still be able to play the game on PS5 via the system’s backward compatibility, but this won’t include any of the enhancements. It’s unclear if Xbox One owners will need to do the same if they wish to play the enhanced version on Xbox Series X/S, though it will also be available via Xbox Game Pass when it launches.

Persona 5 Royal features new content not present in the base game, including a brand new character, additional music, personas and an expanded story. It originally released in 2020 for the PS4, but will now come to other consoles including Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

Needless to say, if you want to play Persona 5 Royal on PS5 but want the enhancements and upgrades, you’ll need to repurchase the game entirely. While other publishers have offered free upgrades in the past, this comes across as a rather bizarre and contentious move by Atlus.
