Xbox boss Phil Spencer has acknowledged that the company didn’t deliver enough games in 2022. Compared to PlayStation and Nintendo which each released a fair amount of exclusives, Xbox was quiet last year in terms of any notable releases. Several games were delayed while others have yet to get a release date. However, Spencer admits that there needs to be a steady flow of great games releasing on the platform going forward.
In a new interview with IGN, Spencer took the blame for the lack of Xbox games released in 2022. He reassured players that things will begin to change in the future as Xbox promises to deliver games more frequently. The company recently held a Developer Direct showcase which confirmed a release date for its anticipated upcoming Arkane game, Redfall, as well as a new release window for Forza Motorsport.

Talking about Xbox’s relatively quiet 2022, Spencer stated:
“Our commitment to our fans is that we need to have a steady release of great games that people can play on our platform, and we didn’t do enough of that in 2022, there’s no doubt. And fundamentally, that’s on me. I’m the head of the business.”
Spencer added that he expects great things in the coming months, especially for Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG Starfield which he mentioned as one of its biggest launches of the year:
“The commitment we have to our customers, to continue to deliver great games, is something I take seriously, the teams take seriously, and 2022 was too light in games. We’re excited to about getting to roll into 2023, having the Developer Direct – I felt really good about the games that we were showing – and also knowing that Starfield is a game that we’re going to highlight in its own show, and then just start off 2023 with good momentum. Like you said, I think we needed that.”
PlayStation has more or less outlined what fans can expect from the gaming giant this year including exclusive releases such as Final Fantasy XVI, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on the horizon. Meanwhile, Nintendo is preparing to release the highly anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingom this May, with talks of new hardware already beginning. As great of a subscription service as Game Pass is, we hope that Xbox starts finally buckling down on releasing exclusives to make the service even more enticing.
