Xbox’s Phil Spencer says the future is quite clear when it comes to first-party titles on other platforms besides Xbox and PC – that these games will come to other consoles at one point or another. During an interview with Destin Lagarie, Spencer says that “keeping games off other platforms is not the path for us”.
He went into discussion regarding Starfield as the Bethesda game is currently the elephant in the room. Reports claim that Starfield will come to PS5 at one point or another, but Xbox has yet to confirm the launch. Phil Spencer didn’t confirm the PS5 port during the interview. However, he didn’t confirm Starfield was not coming to PS5 either.
When asked if Starfield is staying put for the time being, Spencer replied “no”. He says there’s no reason for me to put a ring fence around any game and say this game will not go to a place that it would find players, where it would have business success for us”.
“What we find is we’re able to drive a better business that allows us to invest in great game line-up like you saw [during the Developer Direct]. Our strategy is to allow our games to be available. But to keep games off other platforms […] that’s not a path for us. It doesn’t work for us.”
Spencer’s remarks ring true following the robust Xbox Developer Direct last week. Xbox showcased a number of game updates for DOOM: The Dark Ages, Ninja Gaiden 4, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, South of Midnight, and Expedition 33. The only game at the show that wasn’t pegged for a PS5 launch was South of Midnight. However, it seems that Microsoft will still, at some point, bring it to PlayStation.
Microsoft’s new stance on its so-called “exclusive” lineup follows the company’s weakest year in gaming. The Xbox Series X/S is trailing 18% behind the Xbox One. Xbox revenue has also reported its lowest stats in years.
