South Korean developer Round8 Studio has released a hefty new gameplay update for its upcoming souls-like game called Lies of P. Now before you run away because everyone is doing souls-like these days and not doing it too well, this Pinocchio-inspired hardcore RPG actually looks pretty decent.
Lies of P is inspired by the classic 1883 classic Pinocchio story. In short, the game relies on a balance between being a human and a puppet by lying. There’s also a lot of influence found within the story as the game is littered with puppets, and humans who were once puppets. It is unclear at the moment who the main character is but Round8 Studio says that players can lie in the game and slowly transform into a human. However, this also comes with its own advantages and disadvantages.

There’s a lot going on in the new gameplay trailer but from the first glimpse, you could swear this Lies of P game is a direct Bloodborne sequel. A lot of the game’s look at feel ties back to the original PS4 exclusive. This is especially seen throughout the game’s environments and combat. The gothic abandoned city ooze Bloodborne and the various weapons and attack styles have clearly been inspired by the game too.
The playable character is seen walking through this city with a range of weapons. This includes a katana, dagger and even a giant cleaver with huge teeth. There’s also a wheel with a sawblade, axe and the character can also wield a range of left-handed abilities. These abilities seem like magic and items. One sees him shoot a beam of fire out of his hand. This is no doubt performed through the mechanical arm the player has equipped.
As for the combat, it too is clearly inspired by the souls series. The player is seen parrying enemies, timing attacks perfectly and using a range of combos to take down the monstrous puppets that want him dead. It seems that all enemies are puppets in Lies of P. Why they have gone rogue is still a mystery but the enemies look great. There’s even a small glimpse at a boss fight with a giant police officer puppet.
Lies of P is currently in development. The game’s official description reads:
Neowiz and Round8 Studio today unveiled the first-ever gameplay video for Lies of P, a fantastically baroque Action RPG inspired by the classic Italian novel Pinocchio from Carlo Collodi. The ruined, but once beautiful city of Krat is on full display in the new video. Hideous and twisted automatons rule the landscape, and it’s up to P to find Mr. Geppetto and reverse the calamity that has befallen Krat.
At the moment there’s no exact release date for the game. However, you can find out more about the title on the official site here. Round8 Studios have yet to announce what platforms the game is releasing on.
