On 16 April 2019, Sony took us all by surprise, revealing the first official specification details for their next-gen PlayStation, not even calling it the PS5 at the moment. Sony’s Mark Cerny revealed that the console will have an SSD, a third-gen Ryzen CPU, a Navi GPU and even showed some performance, where fast-travelling in Marvel’s Spider-Man was roughly 17 times faster on the PS5 compared to the PS4 Pro, not to mention it will support ray tracing. This was all fantastic and even talking about it now, I still get nerd-chills. However, one thing that many gamers are worried about (including myself) is the PlayStation 5 price point.

In the Wired article revealing the first details about Sony’s next-gen console, the PlayStation 5 price point wasn’t mentioned. However, Wired’s senior correspondent Peter Rubin has taken to Twitter with a bit more information, which you can read below.
Me: There’s always been a general range of launch pricing. Will the next console hew to that range?@cerny: I believe that we will be able to release it at an SRP [suggested retail price] that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set.

Sure, there is no specific PlayStation 5 price revealed, but it is still good news that the price, according to Cerny, will be appealing to gamers. When pressed if that means that the PS5 will cost more than the PS4 did at launch but still be well worth it, Cerny shut down the conversation about the PlayStation 5 price point, saying that: “That’s about all I can say about it.”
Since the announcement, rumours have also started to float around that the PS5 price will be $499, which is $100 more than the PS4 was at launch.
At the time of writing, nothing about the PlayStation 5’s price has been confirmed, but hopefully, it won’t be in the $599 range and I, for one, do think it should be at $499 to still be appealing to gamers considering the advanced feature set. For South Africans, it is very tough to say what the local pricing will look like due to additional costs, the fluctuating value of the Rand and the fact that we do not have a release date for the PS5 yet.
What do you hope the price of the PS5 will be when it launches? Let us know in the comment section below.
