According to a new report, AMD is skipping RDNA5 and working on UDNA as its next focus on GPU architecture. The company was expected to share RDNA4 news at CES 2025 and this will be the next lineup of GPU tech while it develops UDNA. The source claims that AMD is developing UDNA with a large focus on console gaming and the technology will be used in the PlayStation 6.
Keep in mind that this is all a rumour right now but the source is quite reliable. It comes from Zhangzhonghao who has, in the past leaked accurate console and PC information ahead of industry news. The source says AMD is working with Sony on multiple projects. One of them is the next-gen PlayStation console that will be powered by UDNA. The console will also include a Zen5 CPU. Although the source says this isn’t set in stone yet it could also still use a Zen4 CPU.
AMD is also working with Sony on a new handheld powered by AMD tech. However, the specific tech involved in this device hasn’t been touched on yet. It will likely include either a Z1 or Z2 Extreme chip. I suspect a Z1 in order to keep the cost down and align the device with current PC handheld devices.
The report says that AMD will enter mass production of UDNA in Q2 of 2026 if development goes well. The tech will be led by the RX9000 and MI400. This kind of gives us an idea that the PS6 might be gearing up for launch at the end of 2027.
Lastly, Zhangzhonghao says that Microsoft’s now-confirmed handheld does not have a chip yet. The company is currently deciding between Qualcomm and AMD for the device. However, very little is known about the product at this stage. The source says even the supply chain is being tight-lipped on the development.
Of course, this is all just a rumour for now. So take it with a pinch of salt. The PS6 is still years away but it is still interesting to hear how AMD is approaching not only its console development but also its new GPU architecture.
