Bungie is joining PlayStation. Sony has announced that the giant studio responsible for the Destiny series, and creating the Halo games back in the day, is now part of the PlayStation Worldwide Studios family.
Sony has acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion and while they will own the studio and its assets, Bungie has assured fans that they will still produce multi-platform games. In addition, the studio claims that it will remain an independent publisher.

Sony and Bungie have proved to be great partners in the past. When Destiny launched back in 2013, the two companies partnered for exclusive content and even a marketing deal that saw Destiny skyrocket in popularity.
In the blog post, Bungie explains that the studio still has creative freedom over its games. The studio also explained that Destiny 2 will remain on as many platforms as possible and the PlayStation acquisition won’t change how they release content going forward.
Bungie says that the PlayStation acquisition means that the studio can now hire new staff to support its bigger visions going forward. What these are is still unclear. We know Bungie has the next three years of Destiny 2 planned already. However, the studio is also working on other projects outside of the Destiny universe. Whatever these are, they will be directly affected by the new partnership in a good way.
Bungie has around 800 staff members at the moment who work on the self-publishing service as well as the Destiny 2 ecosystem.
Here are a few words from Pete Parsons, CEO of Bungie.
“We believe games have limitless potential, and that to do anything worthwhile in entertainment, we must bet big on our vision, on our studio, and on our incredible team of trusted creators who build unforgettable worlds that truly matter to people.
In Sony, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie’s heart. Like us, Sony believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become. Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.
Today, Bungie begins our journey to become a global multi-media entertainment company.
