Wild Sheep Studios Wild PS4

PlayStation Exclusive “Wild” Reportedly Cancelled

Back in 2014, Sony announced a new PS4 exclusive game called Wild. The game was in development at Wild Sheep Studio and featured a procedurally generated world where players control human shaman with the ability to inhabit and control animals. With the power, they would explore the world, fight other tribes and complete a range of open-world activities like puzzles and exploration points.

The game was being headed by Michel Ancel, the man behind the Rayman and Beyond Good and Evil series. Sony then showcased Wild again in 2015 at Paris Games Week. However, other than a few images that appeared online, the company has since been silent about the game’s development cycle. In September 2020, Ancel announced that he was retiring from the gaming industry but the director claimed his departure would not affect the development of Wild or Beyond Good and Evil 2.

It seems like Wild has been put on ice. According to Jeff Grubb, who reported on the news through Giant Bomb, Michel Ancel says the game has been cancelled. When asked about the project, Ancel confirmed that the game is no longer in development. Grubb claims:

“I can confirm that game is fully done. There is no Wild anymore… Wild is dead. I think Michel Ancel abandoned the project… he’s not working on it anymore, the project got shut down. The team that was working on it was looking at maybe trying to stay together and work on other projects. I don’t know what happened with that, but they were like, ‘we’re not working on [Wild] anymore, but we do have a lot of talent here, so maybe we can work on some stuff’.”

Of course, Sony has the knack (no pun intended) for reviving games that don’t make it to release within their first development phase. Was saw this with The Last Guardian which was also reportedly cancelled on PS3 and then announced again for PS4. Hopefully, the same thing will happen to Wild. The studio is still open with more than 50 employees according to the LinkedIn page. They have also been actively hiring staff over the past few months.
