Sony announced the PlayStation Plus free games for October, and for the first time in months, it will leave subscribers disappointed. Previous months always included at least one big title like Destiny 2 and Black Ops 3; while October’s big hit shines in its absence.

On the other hand, October is packed with some of 2018’s most anticipated game releases; so if there’s one month where the PlayStation Plus free games lineup could take a dip, it is October. Red Dead Redemption 2, Black Ops 4, and Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey all release next month. The Xbox Games with Gold October lineup also reflects this sentiment.

PlayStation Plus Free Games for October

Earlier this month, a rumour surfaced that the PlayStation Plus free games for October would include Nioh and Diablo III. Unfortunately, that turned out to be fake news and is perhaps the main reason why subscribers will feel let down. Expectations can be a terrible thing.

PlayStation Plus subscribers can download all the free games listed below from October 2.

PlayStation 4 | Main Titles

Friday the 13th: The Game

Your go-to-game to play this Halloween will be free to download, and hopefully, you have seven friends who are also PlayStation Plus subscribers. Friday the 13th: The Game pits up to eight players against each other; each controlling Jason Voorhees at selected intervals, while the rest fight for survival as one of seven counselors. The scenes centre around Camp Crystal Lake, with five primary maps. Although the game received mixed reviews, fans of the genre should enjoy climbing into Jason’s shoes.

Laser League

With Laser League, the October free games lineup sees a second multiplayer for PlayStation 4. You can play as two teams of three players each, or two teams of two players. The game tests your reflexes, with strategy playing a more important role the further teams progress. Player feedback has been mostly positive, with most agreeing that Laser League is indeed “easy to pick up, but near impossible to put down.”

Knowledge is Power | Playlink Bonus Title

If you’ve not yet tried PlayLink, then you should give Knowledge Is Power a try. It is a fantastic and fun game and the perfect opportunity to introduce non-gamers to the PlayStation 4. It resembles something like a mix between a board game and video game mixed with the craziest selfie shots you’ll ever see. Up to six people can join in the fun. We reviewed Knowledge Is Power in November last year and gave it a 7/10.

PlayStation 4 | PlayStation 3 | PlayStation Vita

The October free games for the PlayStation 3 include Master Reboot; a first-person sci-fi adventure game with action and puzzle elements set across 34 unique environments. The Bridge is labelled as an “art” and puzzle game and sees players trying to escape a house. It is also playable on the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation Vita.

Rocketbirds 2: Evolution is a cinematic platforming, action-adventure game for the PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation 4. It includes over 100 upgradeable weapons, costumes, and characters. The final game, 2064: Read Only Memories, is a cyberpunk adventure game also for the PS4 and PS Vita. You play as a journalist that teams up with “the world’s first sapient machine” to unravel the kidnapping of a friend.

If the free games for October leave you cold, then you should check out the exciting PlayStation Store highlights for this week. It includes two big new sales as well as the highly anticipated FIFA 19.
