PlayStation has reportedly been hit with more layoffs, though the scale of these job terminations hasn’t been determined yet. According to one developer, their entire team was recently laid off from the company. This comes in light of Sony Interactive Entertainment announcing a new sole CEO, Hideaki Nishino, last week.
As spotted by Reddit user IcePopsicleDragon, an update on Gamedev.place by a UI engineer named “Ryosuke” revealed that the developer and his team were laid off from PlayStation yesterday. “Most of my team was just laid off from PlayStation,” they wrote. “It was a dream to get to work with Sony on the platform I’d grown up playing since the PS1 and contribute to the PS5, Portal, PSVR2, PS App, and future consoles. If you know anyone who needs an engineer experienced native console UI, feel free to reach out.”
It’s unclear how many layoffs are currently happening at PlayStation as the company hasn’t disclosed these job cuts yet. Some users speculate that it’s part of a restructuring happening at Sony Interactive Entertainment to scale back some of the backend teams. Others believe that Hideaki Nishino, now appointed as the CEO of the company, issued these orders after taking his position, though it’s all just speculative at this point.
Layoffs continue to impact the gaming industry. Earlier this week, BioWare announced a round of layoffs, apparently dwindling its work force to under 100 staff members who are currently working on the next Mass Effect following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. While that may seem like a sizeable amount of developers, given the scale of AAA games these days, less than 100 people working on a big-budget video game is almost unheard of.
We’ll have to wait for an official announcement from PlayStation to confirm these layoffs, though some users also believe that Sony will want to keep this quiet for now.
