Sony recently held its latest PlayStation State of Play event which featured over 14 titles coming to PS5 and PS VR2 in the near future. While the event wasn’t jam-packed with surprises, it did show off a few games that have piqued our curiosity. From Astro Bot to Monster Hunter Wilds, here are the five best announcements from last night’s State of Play.
Concord opened the show with a flashy cinematic trailer that gave off strong Guardians of the Galaxy vibes before debuting the first gameplay that looks a lot like Overwatch. If you love a blend of those ideas, then this might be the game for you. Sadly, it didn’t make the cut on this list. Alien: Rogue Incursion also looks to be a promising and scary PS VR2 experience, while Ballad of Antara will certainly appeal to those seeking another beautiful action-RPG drawing inspiration from From Software.
Five Best Announcements at PlayStation State of Play May 2024
Monster Hunter Wilds
Monster Hunter Wilds is the long-awaited follow-up to 2018’s Monster Hunter World and one that all Monster Hunter fans, new and old alike, will want to keep an eye on. Capcom debuted some new gameplay during the State of Play which gave us our first glimpse at a new monster as well as exploration and some visually stunning combat in the middle of a sandstorm. The game currently has no release date but it’s set to arrive in 2025.
Astro Bot
Astro is back and this time, he’s bringing the big guns – quite literally, actually. Astro Bot was announced last night as a new adventure-platformer title in the beloved PlayStation series, paying homage to some of Sony’s greatest hits like God of War, Uncharted, Horizon and more while being distinctly an Astro Bot game. It packs plenty of charm and creativity that we can’t wait to experience on 6 September for PS5.
Path of Exile 2
Path of Exile 2 is officially coming to PS5 with couch co-op and crossplay. Those seeking a more robust action-RPG experience similar to Diablo will definitely want this on their radar, especially if you missed out on the brilliant first game. Developer Grinding Gear Games showed off a new trailer during the State of Play that looks incredible. It will launch in early access on PS5 and PC via Steam later this year.
Where Winds Meet
If warring dynasties and the historical Ten Kingdoms Era splashed with fantasy elements is your thing, you might want to look at Where Winds Meet. Coming from developer Everstone Studio, the game is a stunning new action-RPG with extremely stylish, fast-paced combat that’s sure to satisfy fans of Sekiro or Wo Long. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a release date yet but has been confirmed for PS5 as well as PC.
Skydance’s Behemoth
The PS VR2 could use a few hits right now and Skydance’s Behemoth looks like it might deliver just that. Judging by the trailer released during State of Play, we can expect some truly epic encounters against, well, behemoth creatures all in virtual reality. The premise already has us hooked and it might give players a reason to dust off their PS VR2 headsets to try it out when it launches later this year.
