A new PlayStation State of Play event is rumoured to take place this September 2024. According to reliable leaker and insider Jeff Grubb, Sony is planning a State of Play next month where the PS5 Pro will likely be unveiled, though it won’t be another full showcase, marking two years since Sony hosted one of its larger showcases.
Speaking on a recent Game Mess Mornings podcast episode, Grubb revealed that a PlayStation State of Play event might take place towards the end of September. He didn’t give any more specifics but stressed that it’s not a showcase. He also believes that the PS5 Pro might be revealed during the State of Play, which developers are apparently holding out on releasing their games for.
September is a safe guess as Sony typically hosted either a showcase or State of Play in previous years around the same time. All eyes seem to be on the PS5 Pro, though many are also wondering what Sony’s first-party studios might be up to. We have yet to see the latest projects from PlayStation’s developers like Bluepoint, Sucker Punch Productions, Santa Monica Studio or Naughty Dog. It’s unclear if this State of Play will blow the lid open on Sony’s future first-party lineup or if the company will save the bigger reveals for a larger show at a later date.
Historically, State of Play events haven’t been the most consistently exciting. While there have been some exceptions, most State of Play events focus on third-party game reveals, PS VR2 or smaller titles.
Since the multiplayer live service misfire Concord isn’t exactly bringing in massive sales or high player numbers right now, there’s hope from players that Sony might be holding its trump cards – that being big-budget single-player exclusives that the company is known for. We’ll have to wait and see if the rumoured State of Play breaks expectations.
