PlayStation VR2 – Don’t Sleep on These 12 Awesome Games

The PlayStation VR2 has been out for a few weeks now and I have spent a good amount of time in the headset. So much so that I have managed to build up some impressive resilience to the usual motion sickness I get when using it. With the time I have spent, I have also jumped between so many cool games that I wanted to put together a guide on some sleeper hits. Games which you may overlook when shopping around for new experiences on the PS VR2.

I have compiled this list with some pros and cons for each game too. In addition, I have added the difficulty of the title so you can judge whether or not it would be something your stomach might handle depending on how prone you are to motion sickness.

Horizon Call of The Mountain

Horizon Call of The Mountain

Pros

  • Likely the best-looking VR game on PS VR2
  • Unrivalled climbing
  • Machine Safari is a great showcase

Cons

  • Combat is clumsy
  • Climbing can get tiresome

Difficulty

  • Advanced VR game for those willing to move around. A lot of arm work is involved.

Horizon Call of The Mountain is the one and only exclusive for PS VR2 at the moment. So this game should be a no-brainer at the moment. It fully utilizes every aspect of the PS VR2 system features including eye tracking, finger sensors, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The game is absolutely stunning from a visual point of view as you climb up giant mountains and explore gorgeous landscapes.

There is a lot of climbing in this game and it works well most of the time. Leaping off platforms to grab ledges feels great and shimmering up a building is exactly the experience you would expect from a VR game set in the Horizons series. The game also has a cool Machine Safari mode where you sit in a boat and travel through an ever-changing scene. This is great for those who want to showcase the visuals on the system.

Townsmen VR

Townsmen VR

Pros

  • A unique spin on a strategy game
  • Relaxing and peaceful

Cons

  • Navigating is clumsy
  • Definitely not your hardcore strategy game

Difficulty

  • Approachable and easy to master

As a fan of strategy games, Townsmen VR is right up my alley. Instead of using a mouse to control the world around me, I could pick things up, place down buildings, throw people into the ocean and much more. Sure, it isn’t as technical as a real-time strategy game but it works. I especially love zooming all the way into the world and looking at all the people working.

There are some fun easter eggs to fiddle around with too like grabbing clouds and combining them together to form larger, darker storm clouds. I also often knocked my villages into the ocean only to have to swim down with my arms to save them from drowning.

Resident Evil Village VR

Resident Evil Village Lady Dimitrescu Mercenaries Multiplayer

Pros

  • More than just a VR mode
  • Fantastic horror gameplay for VR

Cons

  • Not as free-flowing and fast as the main game

Difficulty

  • Advanced VR game with intense shooting and fast-paced movement

Resident Evil Village VR is exactly what the title says – a dedicated VR mode where you can fully play the entire campaign in VR. If you played Resident Evil VII in VR, this is no different. It is a horror game where you are literally thrown into the middle of things. The difference between the modes is here, you’ll have full control over everything. From dual-wielding shotguns with each hand to actually swiping boxes apart with your arm and knife equipped.

Resident Evil Village VR is one of the few games that actually feel like a fully-fledged game rather than a smaller, arcade experience. There’s a lot to love about it.

Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded

Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded

Pros

  • Simple gunplay
  • Arcade shooting feels amazing

Cons

  • Not very long
  • Some stages feel overly difficult

Difficulty

  • Easy to play but hard to master. Rail VR arcade shooting

If you’re looking for a good old arcade shooter then Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded could be it. The game is your typical rollercoaster shooter where you move from one room to the next shooting zombies along the way. However, it is also filled with the typical Zombieland charm. Things like double-tapping a zombie in the head will slow down time. You can also shoot toilet paper to pick it up, have to avoid the Homer Zombie and simply get through each stage without dying.

The game isn’t very long but there are multiple stages with unique tasks which unlock new skins and perks. The replayability is high at least.

Kayak VR: Mirage

Kayak VR: Mirage

Pros

  • Beautiful visuals
  • Calming game

Cons

  • Some cumbersome controls

Difficulty

  • Approachable VR game but motion sickness can be an issue due to the boat and VR mix of gameplay

If you feel like kayaking across some gorgeous locations around the world then Kayak VR is for you. Just be prepared for some motion sickness struggles. The combination of the water and the VR didn’t bode well for me but I have to commend the game for its unique gameplay. You literally have to paddle around the water as you explore some rather breathtaking areas.

There’s a lot to love about Kayak VR. You’ll need some time and patience to perfect the movement but the payoff is well worth it.

Song in the Smoke: Rekindled

Song in the Smoke: Rekindled

Pros

  • Survival gameplay feels great in VR

Cons

  • Clumsy controls and crafting

Difficulty

  • Not all that hard to master VR game. Easier difficulties make it more approachable.

I am not a big fan of survival games but somehow, VR makes them a lot more enjoyable. Song in the Smoke: Rekindled is just that –  a survival VR game where you need to eat, sleep, stay warm and explore the world around you. This would be the most boring game if it wasn’t for VR. The fact that you can pick up rocks and bash them together just makes this so much more immersive.

Watching my buildings come to life thanks to the materials I used was incredibly satisfying too. It made the treks through the forests well worth the time.

Altair Breaker

Altair Breaker

Pros

  • Swordplay feels great
  • A cool gear system

Cons

  • Online game with a shallow solo experience
  • Movement can feel confusing

Difficulty

  • Advanced VR game with lots of movement, and swiping of arms for sword slashes. Lots of gliding around.

Altair Breaker is an online dungeon-crawling game where you play the role of a warrior who beats stuff up. That’s the gist of things. I likely won’t spend much more time on this game due to its reliance on multiplayer but if you don’t mind playing VR with other people, there’s a fantastic role-playing game here with some fun combat to boot.

You’ll complete stages in the game by slashing up enemies using a sword and blocking attacking using a shield. There are also some cool counterattacks and abilities to master. You can also kit your character out with new gear along the way.

Demeo

Demeo PS VR2 PlayStation VR2

Pros

  • A unique take on the board game genre
  • Great fun for dungeon-crawling fans

Cons

  • Not much single-player stuff here

Difficulty

  • Other than moving around, Demeo is easy to master and the gameplay is quick to learn.

If you have ever wanted to play a Dungeons and Dragons game in VR, Demeo is the closest thing you’ll find. You enter different campaigns set in some cool-looking dungeons. Along the way, you can move your party members around a board-game-come-to-life board and use cards to pull off cool attacks.

Each campaign features unique enemies and dungeons to explore. I especially enjoyed how I was able to get right up into the action of the board by zooming all the way in.

Moss Book I and Moss Book II

Moss and Moss Book II PS VR2 PlayStation VR2

Pros

  • Excellent storytelling
  • Beautiful visuals
  • Easy to play

Cons

  • Both games aren’t very long

Difficulty

  • Approachable VR game without much to learn apart from Sense Controller buttons

The original Moss game was likely one of the best VR games around. Both the original and the sequel have now been enhanced for PS VR2. The game sees you control a little mouse named Quill. The VR experience is played from a top-down camera perspective and you control Quill across a range of stages by looking around the environment as he walks about.

But the game’s presentation and unique camera perspective make Moss so enjoyable. Quill can attack enemies and interact with puzzles along the way too. So as you watch in on this world, it is almost like reading an interactive story.

The Last Clockwinder

The Last Clockwinder

Pros

  • Unique puzzle gameplay
  • Fun and approachable mechanics
  • Relaxing game

Cons

  • Movement and mechanics can be clumsy

Difficulty

  • Fairly easy VR game to learn. You need to walk around and lots of arm movements are involved.

One of the best puzzle games available on PS VR2 now is The Last Clockwinder. It is basically all about using time and robots in order to complete a series of tasks. Each stage will offer a range of ways to complete the objective and I had to place down robots, perform the action I wanted them to perform and they would repeat that action over and over again.

As a result, each of these robots helps bring the world to life by tossing items, pulling levels and interacting with the world around them. All by what I tasked them to do. I especially enjoyed how calming The Last Clockwinder was. The music and sound effects from the world around me all add to this whimsical feeling the game sends out.

Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge Enhanced Edition

Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy's Edge Enhanced Edition

Pros

  • Authentic Star Wars setting
  • Gunplay feels great

Cons

  • Clumsy inventory system

Difficulty

  • Advanced VR game for those willing to walk around and shoot stuff

I can’t tell you how cool it felt the first time I shot a blaster in Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge. The game is an authentic Star Wars experience brought to life in VR where you get roped into a galactic war between space pirates. As you complete each mission, you’ll unlock new weapons to shoot, and gadgets to fiddle with around the world.

I enjoyed how well delivered this game was in the sense of bringing Star Wars to VR. It might be a bit clumsy every now and then but if you’re a Star Wars fan I definitely recommend it.

Gran Turismo 7

Gran Turismo 7 Review - For the Love of Car Culture

Pros

  • Gorgeous garage mode
  • Racing feels great

Cons

  • The toughest motion sickness game to master
  • The car showcase feels shallow

Difficulty

  • If you’re walking around the car in showcase mode this is easy. However, driving can be a challenge from a motion sickness perspective.

Last, but definitely not least is Gran Turismo 7. This game is already a fully-fledged racing simulator but with PS VR2, you can now compete in almost every race and mode while wearing the headset. The good news here is that Sony didn’t limit the VR experience to a separate mode as they did with the Gran Turismo Sport game.

I spent most of my time walking around the showroom looking at cars. It is unbelievably beautiful to experience. Racing, on the other hand did make me feel sick within a minute on the track.

Final Thoughts

Of course, this list is just a few PS VR2 games I have played. I also have my eyes on Cosmonious High, Pistol Whip, Garden at the Sea and The Light Brigade. When I get my hands on those, I will likely update this list with more titles. We also have the launch of The Dark Pictures: Switchback this month which I am super keen to get stuck into.
