PlayStation Wants to Turn The Destiny Franchise Into Movies

Sony and PlayStation has plans to eventually turn the Destiny franchise into movies following their acquisition of Bungie. PlayStation have been pushing for movie and television adaptations of their various IPs, with HBO’s The Last of Us and a planned Ghost of Tsushima movie in the works, in addition to the upcoming Uncharted movie.

Speaking in a recent earnings call Q&A, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki illustrated their plans with Bungie, and briefly mentioned that they plan to turn some of Bungie’s franchises into movies. Naturally, this includes Destiny which is currently Bungie’s only IP that we know of beyond their previous work on Halo.

It’s possible that whatever Bungie is working on next for PlayStation could also be turned into a movie. However, given Destiny‘s success in the gaming world, this seems like the most logical choice to adapt into a movie.

Totoki’s full response reads:

“It’s not just for the gaming area, but the multi-using of IP and merchandising of IP – like a game title maybe put into movies. Bungie want to nurture the IP they have in a multi-dimensional manner, and that’s their hope. For that, we believe we can help that – we have Sony Pictures and Sony Music, and Bungie can leverage our platform so that their IP can flourish and grow big.”

Bungie’s past marketing for Destiny usually included cinematic-level CGI trailers that should already give us a good indication of what a Destiny movie may look like. While Sony currently owns Bungie, they’ve promised to keep the Destiny franchise multiplatform, though it’s likely that a new IP will be exclusive to PlayStation.

Sony Pictures are currently producing the upcoming live-action Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, while a Ghost of Tsushima movie was greenlit last year. HBO and Chernobyl producer Craig Mazin are also working on a live-action television adaptation of The Last of Us, which stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie.
