Pokemon Developer Game Freak Suffers Major Hack Resulting in Internal Info Leaking

Pokemon developer Game Freak has acknowledged a hack resulting in thousands of employee details being obtained through unauthorized access. Game Freak says the hack originally took place in August. However, the news only went public this past weekend following internal discussions and changes at the company.

Over 2600 people have been affected by this hack. The leak resulted in contract workers’ and former employees’ information leaking online. Game Freak says since the incident, the company has reinspected the servers to ensure the incident does not occur again. It has also improved the online security measures.

The leak didn’t only affect personal information. Hackers were able to get hold of Pokemon Legends Z-A data and source code for other Pokemon games. At the moment, nothing has been made public regarding these games. It is reported that in total, over a terabyte of information was stolen which includes source codes and game files for released and unreleased projects.

We don’t know if the hackers plan on releasing any information regarding Pokemon Legends Z-A. Given the game’s secrecy, the data is likely being held ransom and offered to Game Freak as a price to prevent leaks.

Pokemon Z-A is one of the many games Game Freak is currently working on. The Nintendo Switch game is rumoured to launch in early 2025. According to sources, Game Freak is also working on the next-gen Pokemon game planned for Nintendo’s unannounced console.
