Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Officially Announced

A new Prince of Persia game was revealed during last night’s Summer Game Fest 2023 Opening Showcase by Ubisoft. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a 2D Metroidvania-styled platformer that goes back to the origins of the franchise, ditching the third-person perspective that has become synonymous with the series since The Sands of Time. A release date of 18 January 2024 was also announced.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown puts players in the shoes of a redesigned Persian warrior named Sargon who must explore the cursed region of Mount Qaf in order to find the missing Prince Ghassan. The gameplay shown during the announcement trailer offered fans a glimpse at the dangerous platforming, puzzle-solving and boss battles – one against Jahandar the Manticore was briefly shown.

“Dash into a stylish and thrilling action-adventure platformer game set in a mythological Persian world where the boundaries of time and space are yours to manipulate,” reads the official description on the game’s website. Players will be able to use “time powers” to manipulate time for puzzling, platforming and fights.

While it isn’t The Sands of Time Remake that fans are still eagerly waiting to see, we can at least rest well knowing that Prince of Persia is somewhat back in the gaming world and appears to be delivering on the goods. The 2D platforming style was a wise decision as it’s a throwback to the very first Prince of Persia game which was also a 2D platformer.

Ubisoft revealed a bit more about the gameplay for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown:

“Use your Time Powers, combat and platforming skills to perform deadly combos and defeat time-corrupted enemies and mythological creatures. Acquire and equip new Amulets at shopkeepers to play as you see fit.”

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown launches on 18 January 2024 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Check out the reveal trailer below:
