PS Portal Gets PS5 Cloud Streaming in Supported Regions

The PlayStation Portal is about to become more than just a low-bitrate console streaming handheld. Sony announced that PS5 Cloud Streaming will be released on the device in beta soon. The cloud streaming features will be added by a new firmware update rolling out today and slowly unlocked in supported regions.

Of course, supported regions here mean places where Sony offers cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus. If you can’t stream PS3 games through PlayStation Plus Premium and you live in a country where you only get PlayStation Plus Deluxe, you’re out of luck. That means no cloud streaming for you, South African reading this article in hopes that somehow brands take the country a little more seriously and offer cool features for products we pay the same price for.

Supported regions include: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States

Sony says PlayStation Portal cloud streaming will require a minimum of 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. There will be 120 games to choose from when the beta rolls out. Features will be limited at launch too. You won’t be able to use party chats, 3D audio, in-game purchases or game trials. You also won’t be able to stream PS4 or PS3 games. Only the available titles.

The firmware update is also bringing a much-needed tweak to the Portal’s audio. The update will now lower the minimum volume on the device so when the volume is low, it is actually low. I have found myself having to turn down the in-game sound as well as the PS Portal volume because the speakers are too loud on the lowest dial.

  • Speaker audio output adjustment to make the volume lower when the audio level is set to minimum
  • You will now be able to adjust settings of your PlayStation Link device from the PS Portal Settings menu, allowing you to optimize the volume and sidetone volume.
