Sony has officially signalled that it will stop producing new units of its handheld console, the PS Vita. The last two PS Vita models shipped by Sony were the black and the white wi-fi models. All the models that are currently listed, are marked as “shipment complete“. This means that no newer models will be shipped.

The PS Vita was launched as a handheld gaming console by Sony in December 2011 in Japan, and 2012 worldwide. It wasn’t an exceptionally popular device from Sony, only having sold just over 16 million units globally. This is compared to another popular handheld (rather hybrid) console, the Nintendo Switch which has sold 32 million units since it was launched in March 2017. The sales figures for the PS Vita are also significantly lower than Sony’s previous handheld console, the PSP (PlayStation Portable) which has sold over 80 million units worldwide before it was discontinued in 2014.

Sony’s PS Vita might be its last handheld console for a while. The company’s Senior Vice President, Hiroyuki Oda confirmed in late 2018 that Sony does not plan to release a successor to the PS Vita.

Currently, we do not have any plans regarding a new handheld device. In Japan, we will manufacture PlayStation Vita until 2019. From there, shipping will end.

So the writing’s been on the wall for a while now that Sony was planning on discontinuing the PS Vita, and based on the sales figures, it doesn’t come as a major surprise. Poor sales figures could be blamed on the rise of mobile gaming, where consumers opted to rather use their smartphones to play games than buy a separate handheld console, like the PS Vita. The handheld console had some pretty cool games like Persona 4 Golden, Gravity Rush, Dargon Quest Builder, Final Fantasy X and many more.
