Over the past weekend, users on PS5 have begun spotting PS3 games on the built-in PlayStation Store. Multiple users report seeing icons for PS3 games which haven’t been seen on the store since the PlayStation 3 games. Some of these games weren’t even visible on the PS4 store due to the lack of backwards compatibility.

The first set of games that were spotted include Dead or Alive 5. The PS5 PlayStation Store has the game listed for £7.99. However, you can’t purchase the title.

Soon after seeing Dead or Alive 5, more reports of even more PS3 games on the store were seen on Twitter. Users spotted the PS3 version of Bejeweled as well as Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. All three games had their own price tag.

While I would usually urge you to not get excited about this, the recent reports of Sony adding backwards compatibility to the PS5 might be related to these findings. Last week, it was revealed that Sony was granted a PS5 backwards compatibility patent that would use the console’s CPU to spoof a PS3 legacy mode. Mark Cerny has reportedly worked on this mode and while each game would require “fine grain frequency control” tailored for the CPU, it sounds no different from the way Microsoft brought its Xbox 360 games to the Xbox One.

Sony is also working on an Xbox Game Pass competitor service and these PS3 games could be part of that package. Recent reports claimed that Sony is rebranding PlayStation Plus as a tiered service while also scrapping PlayStation Now. The top-tier subscription plan would offer classic games as part of the service. These games will no doubt be PS3 titles. Last week, Sony started pulling PlayStation Now gift cards from retailers ahead of this new service. It is only a matter of time before Sony confirms this.
