PS5 and Xbox Series X Users Can Delete Unwanted Sections of Games

The storage situation on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S SSD is looking dire. We now know that both consoles will have very limited storage capacity when it comes to the SSD. The PlayStation 5 may ship with an 825GB SSD but after the OS and pre-installed content, there’s only 665GB free. When it comes to the Xbox Series X, the 1TB SSD allows for 802GB of free space after the OS and other system tool are installed. This means games are going to have to fight for space. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Console owners are able to delete portions of games which they don’t want or plan on using.

According to KeenGamer who picked up on a story from 2019, system architect Mark Cerny touched on this feature a while back. Mark claimed that all games require installation on the PS5 SSD due to the speed difference between the SSD and the disc drive. In addition, Cerny explained games are no longer being treated like a big block of data. Instead, users are now able to access a certain portion of the game and delete content from it as they play through it. For example, players can delete a single-player campaign from a game when they have completed it. If they don’t play multiplayer they can then delete that mode instead.

Microsoft also confirmed this a recent interview. Jason Ronald from Xbox discussed the ways users can approach storage in the Xbox Series X and S. He claims they are able to “electively uninstall different components of the game”.  Ronald says the feature allows users to “get the most benefit out of the available storage that you have”.

Keep in mind that both consoles rely on developers supporting this feature. The game won’t allow you to delete modes and data if the title has not been optimized for it. We can only hope that large games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will do so. 802GB of storage is not a lot of space. 665GB of storage is even less. Not to mention the crazy price tags for the expandable SSDs on the Xbox.
