Last week when Sony hosted its Road to PS5 event, the company revealed that the PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility would support the top 100 PS4 games on the console at launch. However, it seems that will not actually be the case and the console maker will support the majority of the existing PS4 title.

Sony issued a statement to clarify its stance on backwards compatibility for the console saying their next-gen console will support an “overwhelming majority” of the 4,000+ existing PS4 titles.

“A quick update on backward compatibility — With all of the amazing games in PS4’s catalog, we’ve devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favourites on PS5. We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.”

Sony also revealed that older titles will run better on the PS5 too as they claim backwards compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on the PlayStation 5.

We’re expecting backwards compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers.”

Sony claims that Mark Cerny “provided a snapshot into the Top 100 most-played PS4 titles” as a demonstration of the company’s current PS5 backwards compatibility efforts. They claim to have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as they move towards launch. “We will provide updates on PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility, alongside much more PS5 news, in the months ahead.”

Sony came under fire from fans last week when they made it sound as if the PlayStation 5 would be limited in support for PS4 titles at launch. It seems that is not the case.
