Sony is rolling out a new firmware update on PS5 that will see the return of its classic themes originally added during PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebrations. From 24 April (today), the update will roll out in phases so some regions might receive it in the coming days. In addition to the classic themes coming back, the update will also add the new Audio Focus feature, making it easier to adjust audio to your hearing preferences.
PlayStation will be adding its classic themes to PS5 again after quite a bit of fan demand for its return. The available themes emulate the UI of PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 to create unique layouts on your dashboard, including new start-up screens with its nostalgic intros. Sony initially removed the themes after making them available for a few months last year, though many players called for the company to add it back as, without PS4’s custom themes carrying over to this generation, that’s the only way we can really customise the PS5 UI to our preferences.
Additionally, the latest firmware update for PS5 will also add the new Audio Focus Feature which “increases immersion by providing presets to amplify soft sounds to meet your hearing preferences, ensuring a clearer audio experience when using headphones or headsets.” Sony broke it down below:
- Boost Low Pitch: Amplify low-frequency sounds like roaring engines and rumbling noises.
- Boost Voices: Amplify voice chats, character voices, and other middle-frequency sounds.
- Boost High Pitch: Amplify high-frequency sounds like footsteps and metallic noises.
- Boost Quiet Sounds: Amplify low-volume sounds in a wide range of frequencies.
As of writing, it’s unclear exactly when users will receive the prompt to download the update. Since it’s currently rolling out in phases, make sure you keep an eye on your PS5 for the notification as soon as it’s available.
