New hardware sales trends have revealed that the PS5 is likely to remain the best-selling console in the United States until at least 2025. According to the latest data from Circana, the entire US video game market will finish 2023 at a 3% growth compared to 2022 reaching $58.3 billion.
Circana says that hardware sales have helped the growth reach this all-time high. According to the data, hardware sales are up 19% compared to the same time in 2022. This is mostly thanks to the surge in PS5 sales which was a result of the increased stock output earlier this year.

GI.biz says that the supply increase for the PS5 saw console sales skyrocket this year. While Sony aggressively targeted more shipments this year, supply actually increased in July 2022. As a result, console sales have remained strong for PS5 and will unlikely change until at least 2025. The console is expected to remain the best-selling hardware until such a time.
To compare current sales to its previous generation, the PS5 is now trending 5% above the PS4. The Xbox Series X/S is trailing 10% behind the Xbox One and 6% behind the Xbox 360. Nintendo is also doing quite well thanks to its strong software lineup. Nintendo Switch sales have surpassed the Wii. It also remains 5 million units behind the PlayStation 2 and 1 million behind the Xbox 360.
The remainder of 2023 is going to be interesting for hardware sales. Circana claims that it is the first year this generation where consoles are readily available in time for the holiday season. In addition, a robust lineup of games is soon to follow. The combination will likely result in a highly successful season of sales for all game makers.
