It has been a while since we have heard anything new in regards to the PS5. We know the console will feature backwards compatibility, ray-tracing support and much more. Thanks to the latest “Playing for the Planet” news released by Sony, we also now know the PlayStation 5 will use “much lower” power consumption than that of the PS4.

The reveal was posted on the PlayStation Blog where Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment touched on the commitment Sony has for a greener world. The blog post goes through a few details explaining SIE’s commitment to reducing power consumption including the System-on-a-Chip used on the PS4 as well as the Suspend-to-RAM feature that allows the PS4 to go into a low-power Rest Mode.

In the blog post, Jim Ryan announced that the next-generation PlayStation console, the PS5 will include the possibility to suspend gameplay with much lower power consumption than the PS4. Sony estimates the feature can be achieved at around 0.5 W and that if one million users enable the feature, it would save the equivalent to the average electricity use of 1,000 US homes.

The gaming community is diverse and growing at a fast pace. There is an undeniable opportunity for leaders in the games industry to take a stand and support the UN Environment team by communicating the importance of preserving natural resources for generations to come. At PlayStation, we believe games have the power to ignite social change through educating people, evoking emotions, and inspiring hope. We could not be more proud to be part of the Playing for the Planet Alliance and the commitments announced. We look forward to seeing what the industry can achieve together.

So we now know the PS5 will feature a low-power state “Rest Mode” which comes at no surprise. The big news here is the console will be much more powerful than the PS4 but use a lot less power which is fantastic news.
