PS5 Pro Officially Announced With Design, Release Date and Price

PlayStation has officially announced the PS5 Pro, the next upgraded model of the PS5, during the latest technical presentation. System architect Mark Cerny delivered a quick breakdown of the console’s robust performance over the standard PS5 console, largely focusing on blurring the lines between Fidelity and Performance graphical modes to deliver something in the middle with the newer, more powerful hardware. The design, release date and price of the PS5 Pro were also revealed.

Mark Cerny began the presentation by unveiling the PS5 Pro’s targeted improvements for Graphics Modes. Cerny claims that the new console will work to upscale the resolution of games while aiming for a steadier and smoother 60FPS instead of the usual 30FPS when choosing Fidelity mode in games. Cerny highlighted this using several game examples including Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part II Remastered and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, all showcased on the PS5 Pro.

Have a look at the PS5 Pro’s key performance features below:

  • Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

As detailed on the PlayStation blog post, the PS5 Pro Game Boost promises to work on more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games too. “Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games,” said PlayStation.

Finally, Sony unveiled the design, release date and price of the PS5 Pro – and it’s quite steep. For the added power, the console will retail at $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR and ¥119,980 JPY (including taxes). We’re still waiting for confirmation on the Pro’s South African pricing but we’ll update you as soon as we have the information.
