PS5 Sales Jump 180% While Xbox and Nintendo Fall

Sony’s new aggressive marketing and replenished stock are helping the PS5 more than ever before. According to new retail numbers, the PS5 now accounts for more than 50% of all console sales in the UK for 2023. These sales are attributed to a number of factors.

Firstly, Hogwarts Legacy has been a large driver for video game growth over the past few months. It was the fastest-selling game in the UK since Red Dead Redemption 2 and has already outsold both Elden Ring and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

GI.biz says that Q1 2023 sales have outsold Q1 2022 across both video game and console sales. However, only Sony has seen growth on the console sale front. PS5 sales are up 180% year-on-year. Microsoft’s Xbox has fallen 18% and Nintendo’s Switch console has declined 25% compared to Q1 2022.

The spike in PS5 sales is thanks to Sony replenishing the stock of the unit across the globe. In Q1 2022, the console was extremely difficult to get hold of. So much so that the company was still trickling in a few dozen units into retail stores every few weeks. In addition, customers had to wait in digital queues to pre-order these new stock drops. We can officially say the “stock drop” phrase is dead.

Apart from Sony’s spike in sales, the stats for March show that Resident Evil 4 Remake was the best-selling game of the month. 65% of all sales were on PlayStation while 20% were on Xbox and 15% were on PC. WWE 2K23 also entered the charts at number 4 last month. However, the game didn’t sell as well as last year’s WWE 2K22. According to the stats, sales were down 20%.
