The PS5 launched back in 2020 with an Explore panel. This panel lets users access various aspects of their console, catch up on game news and get a quick glance at the PlayStation Store content. However, the Explore panel was limited to certain regions. Of course, South Africans didn’t get access to the menu. Thankfully, Sony recently dropped the feature for a new global version called the Welcome Hub and it is now live in the country.
The Welcome Hub started rolling out in September across the globe. It went live in Australia earlier this week and last night, in South Africa. The menu is essentially a place to get an overview of whatever you prefer to see on your PS5. There are widgets you can move around and resize to your liking and various presets that decide how the experience looks.
If you’re a single-player gamer, you can choose to turn off all friend activity menus and stick to your Trophy progress, game news feeds for the games you follow, the battery life of your accessories and some PlayStation Store and Plus updates.
The background image customization is a big deal and something PS5 fans have been asking for. The Welcome Hub includes several wallpapers that you can choose from. Some of these are static and others animate while you’re sitting on the screen. Keep in mind that the Welcome Hub only shows the content and background when you’re on the icon. So the wallpapers, as cool as they look, won’t show when you’re navigating across your game icons.
With that being said, you can now turn on your PS5 and experience the Welcome Hub for yourself. If you don’t have the menu yet, be sure to have downloaded all the PS5 System Features first. To do this open Settings – System – PS5 System Features. This will trigger all of the latest features to download. This is separate outside of the PS5 System Update.
