It’s only a matter of time before Nintendo unveils the Switch 2, which thanks to a bunch of leaks is now one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry. Naturally, it’s expected to sell big considering that it’s following the highly successful Nintendo Switch. However, one known analyst predicts that, despite the Switch 2 making a big splash in 2025, the PS5 will still ultimately outsell it, at least in the US.
Circana analyst Mat Piscatella ran through some of his predictions for 2025 on Bluesky, speculating that the Nintendo Switch 2 will sell “4.3 million units in the US in 2025.” However, he also believes that this still won’t be enough to beat the PS5’s sales. “Expecting to see hardware constraints for several months after a significant early demand surge,” said Piscatella. “And units sold will, of course, be dependent upon manufacturing capabilities and will. I still expect PlayStation 5 to rank 1st overall in hardware units sold in the US during the year.”
Piscatella may have a point about there potentially being very high early demand for the Switch 2 and this is just in the US. Worldwide, the Switch 2 has a much wider net to cast, assuming Nintendo is taking early precautions in preventing scalpers from doing the devil’s work. The analyst still believes that we’ll see some type of hardware constraints for the Switch 2 in its first few months though, which will lead to the PS5 still dominating sales charts for 2025.
These predictions are simply for the US market so there’s no way of knowing how well the Switch 2 will perform worldwide. Given the enormous hype behind the upcoming console, we predict Nintendo will have quite a massive year – and that’s not even counting big upcoming exclusives like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends Z-A. PlayStation is also expected to have a pretty good year too with Ghost of Yotei on the calendar.
