Sony’s rumoured new PS5 console is reportedly undergoing testing ahead of its official reveal. Back in September, we reported on the news that Sony was working on a new PS5 console variation that would support a detachable disc drive at the back of the console thanks to its additional USB C port. This console is exactly the same as the current models on the market except for its additional USB C port neatly tucked away at the back. This additional port is included specifically for users who want to pick up the optional disc drive attachment.
Details are still a bit sketchy on this new console hardware. By the sound of things, Sony will convert all future PS5 consoles to Digital Editions and only sell one model of the PS5 on the market. Those who want a disc model can then purchase the optional disc drive attachment and plug it into the console via USB C. Sony is reportedly also adding the disc drive into some console bundles
This disc drive accessory will likely support the current Digital Edition PS5 too meaning you can also upgrade your console to a disc model.
According to a new report by the original source, the new PS5 console with the extra USB C port as well as the additional disc drive attachment are both currently in testing and “working flawlessly”. The report claims that we should see an official announcement regarding the console and disc drive soon.
Given it is already the middle of December, I doubt Sony is going to announce this device now. However, keep in mind that in early January CES kicks off. Sony does have a press conference planned for the show and while it usually relates to TV tech and other advancements, it would make for the best place to announce this.
Small update on the PlayStation 5 that has a detachable disc drive – I’ve heard from two people now that the test kit is in people’s hands and it “works flawlessly”. We should hear more about it officially soon.https://t.co/2rzlDrjYAb
