PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Stock Shortages May Last Until 2023

Delays in the production of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles are not ending anytime soon according to Japanese manufacturer Toshiba. The company says that consumers might struggle to get their hands on the new consoles until at least late 2023. For those who don’t know, the current new generation of gaming consoles has been affected by the massive shortage of semiconductors brought on by the covid-19 pandemic. The console stock trickles into the market on a spontaneous basis and at times, the gaming hardware is next to impossible to find.

This has been an ongoing issue since the launch of the hardware last year and Toshiba says the issue is not going to ease anytime soon. According to Takeshi Kamebuchi, a director in charge of semiconductors at Toshiba, the supply chain of chips will remain very tight until at least September 2023. He says that in some cases, customers (Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo) may not be fully served until then.

Toshiba is doing everything it can to help with the shortages of semiconductors in the market. The company plans to invest $545 million into supporting the production of the technology. In addition, they are considering building another factory to accommodate the demand.

Kamebuchi says that console makers including Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are among the customers making the biggest demands for semiconductors. Toshiba has been unable to meet the demands and apologises for the frustration.

“Game console makers are among the customers making the strongest demands, and I’m sincerely sorry for their frustration as none of them have a 100% satisfaction.”

The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S stock shortages were meant to last until the end of this year. However, developments in the industry including new hardware announcements such as the SteamDeck, OLED Switch and smartphones have added further pressure to the manufacturing process. The short of it, if you’re looking for a console and find stock, buy it before you miss out.
