Path of Exile 2 launched last night in early access. While the initial hours subsequent to the launch were met with nasty server issues, today, users are able to get into the game. The next issue on the table is the horrible input lag on PS5 and Xbox. So much so that Path of Exile 2 is unplayable on console due to over 1000ms input lag.
I am not sure what is causing this horrendous input lag at the moment, but it doesn’t seem to stem from the server. In fact, playing Path of Exile 2 myself, I noticed that even in South Africa, the game’s ping was as low as 18ms at times. This meant that enemy damage and reaction time against server-based objects were fast and snappy.
However, the player movement and input are the real issue. When walking, pushing your controller forward results in at least a 1-second delay in-game. It gets worse depending on your game graphics settings. For example, setting the game to 30Hz increases this by a substantial amount.
One would think that increasing the frame rate to 120Hz would improve the input lag. While it makes a slight improvement, it is still unbearable. I tested the 120Hz mode on my PS5 Pro and still had the same 1000ms+ input lag.
I am not the only one dealing with the issue. Over on Reddit, users say both Xbox and PS5 seem to be suffering from the problem. One user tried to play this on his PlayStation Portal, and given the device’s increased latency, this was even worse than on a TV.
At the moment, there’s no fix. I did manage to minimise the in-game stuttering by disabling cross-play, but the input lag still remained. It doesn’t seem like Grinding Gear Games have acknowledged the issue either. The current forum post says the studio is working on the “high priority problems,” which include not being able to purchase micro transactions. Because heaven forbid users can’t purchase a skin, let alone play the game.
