PPSSPP is now available on iPhone marking the app’s first “official” launch on the platform since its Cydia jailbreak origins. The PSP emulator gained popularity a few years back but up to now, has only been available on jailbroken devices. Of course, you could also download PPSSPP through other means such as developer app signing but this takes the effort out of the experience.
PPSSPP joins the likes of Delta and Gamma – two apps that also debuted on iPhone in the past few weeks. Delta is a Game Boy Advanced and Nintendo DS emulator while Gamma, on the other hand, is a PS One emulator.
The latest PSP emulator well, plays PSP games. The creator of the app says that most iPhone devices pack enough power to run all PSP games. This is a small blessing as other emulators, such as the Dolphin Wii app, require Just-in-Time recompilers to run. Apple has barred developers from using JiT recompilers so we’ll likely never see Dolphin launch on iPhone.
PPSSPP works on iOS 12 and up and is also available on iPadOS 12. Currently, the app is available for free but the developer says a $5 version will launch soon. It will likely function the same as the Android version meaning nothing is different but the money supports the dev’s efforts.
The PSP emulator will let users now play games such as Valkyria Chronicles II, Patapon, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Not to mention the OG Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. There’s also God of War: Ghost of Sparta.
If you want to grab the app, head over to the App Store here. You’ll need to get hold of your PSP ISO files, of course. The PPSSPP emulator doesn’t require any further BIOS files to function. You simply install the app, grab your game files and play them.
I will leave this video below for nostalgia feels.
