Psychonauts 2 Double Fine Multiple New Projects

Psychonauts 2 Developer is Working on Multiple New Projects

Psychonauts 2 developer Double Fine is currently hard at work on “multiple new projects”, according to a recent blog post. Following Xbox’s acquisition of Double Fine, it looks like some resources are being pumped into the acclaimed studio as they’re now splitting to work on several new projects.

On the crowd-funding platform Fig, Double Fine revealed that they’re moving on from Psychonauts 2 to work on multiple new projects. The studio’s boss Tim Schafer stated earlier this year that they’d like to work on something original and “completely surprising”, which may mean bad news for those hoping for a third Psychonauts game.

The updated blog post reads:

“The studio is already splitting up into various teams and starting different projects that we think you’ll enjoy. We like experimentation here at Double Fine. Every game is a chance to explore new ideas, new visual styles or gameplay, emotions, and more.”

It’s possible that one of those teams might be working on the highly anticipated Psychonauts 3, but according to Schafer, they’re all working on new projects as the team split has now given them avenues to do so. With the backing of Xbox, Double Fine might be gearing up to become one of the company’s leading first-party developers. The studio’s next titles will be released for all platforms that support Xbox Game Pass.

Schafer’s also commented on the new projects being handled by multiple teams:

“There was a period at the end of Psychonauts 2 where we had all hands on deck to finish the game, but we’re definitely going back to multiple projects afterward. Until it happens again? Who knows? We don’t have any rules about that but we’re set up to have multiple projects and we have enough ideas to do that.

We’ve been given so much creative freedom now. Nobody has probed Psychonauts to second guess our decisions or anything like that. We’ve been trusted to handle the creative side completely, but we can opt-in to all these resources, like having it tested for accessibility and mental health checks.”

Psychonauts 2 is currently available for PS4, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. It’s also available on Xbox Game Pass.
