Apple and mobile chipmaker, Qualcomm, have been in a legal battle for years and have now reached an agreement, settling the disputes and agreeing to work better together once again. The settlement comes before another case was expected to commence, dealing with the disagreements between Qualcomm and Apple.

The agreement reached between Qualcomm and Apple extends over a 6-year period for an undisclosed amount. The agreement is for a licensing deal Apple is extending to Qualcomm to supply chips for its mobile devices.

Qualcomm and Apple today announced an agreement to dismiss all litigation between the two companies worldwide. The settlement includes a payment from Apple to Qualcomm. The companies also have reached a six-year license agreement, effective as of April 1, 2019, including a two-year option to extend, and a multiyear chipset supply agreement.

Prior to the agreement reached, Apple was ordered by a San Diago jury to pay Qualcomm an amount of $31 million for allegedly violating three of Qualcomm’s patents. Before that, Apple sued for $1 billion claiming royalties from Qualcomm for apparent unfair patent licensing practices. Qualcomm then filed a $7 billion counter-claim against Apple. Now, all of this is moot as the two tech companies have settled between themselves and will continue giving people new devices.

Now that the dispute has been settled, the race is on to which mobile phone maker will be leading the way with new technologies, especially with 5G on the horizon. Perhaps this truce can also help Apple regain its huge lead over Huawei in the smartphone market, as Huawei has become quite the force to be reckoned with.
