The Pokemon community are mourning the loss of Rachael Lillis today after the voice actress died at 46. Lillis was battling breast cancer. She was best known for her work on the Pokemon series where she voiced Ash’s friend Misty and Team Rocket’s Jessie.
Veronica Taylor, who voices Ash in the Pokemon animated series shared the news on social media along with her condolences. She said:
“It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Rachael Lillis on Saturday evening, 10 August 2024. Rachael was an extraordinary talent, a bright light that shone through her voice whether speaking or singing. She will be forever remembered for the many animated roles she played, with her iconic performances as Pokemon‘s Misty and Jessie being the most beloved.”
She continued:
“Rachael was so thankful for all the generous love and support that was given to her as she battled cancer. It truly made a positive difference. Her family also wishes to thank you as they take this time to grieve privately. A memorial is being planned for a future date.”
Laurie Orr, Lillis’ sister shared a GoFundMe page where fans can help donate to cover medical costs regarding her treatment. The page has since reached its goal of $100,000 across 2,7k donations.
Lillis was born in 1978 and trained in opera before becoming a voice actress. She starred in 423 episodes of Pokemon between 1997 and 2015. When she wasn’t working on Misty and Jessie, the star was part of other shows including Hunter x Hunter, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and the voice role of Satsuki in the 1992 TV series Guardian of Darkness.
