Ahead of its release on 11 June 2021, Insomniac Games has detailed the Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart accessibility options that will enable gamers with various backgrounds to enjoy the game. Insomniac Games says they are aware of how important it is to create ways in which all gamers can enjoy a game. This includes creating accessibility options across all four categories including vision, auditory, motor/dexterity, and cognitive.
The developer first began its experience with accessibility options back in 2018 with Marvel’s Spider-Man. However, Insomniac Games says that they have further enhanced their approach with the Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart accessibility options.
First off we have the contrast options. These are designed to make key information in the game stand out and will help players who are blind or have low vision. Some options include High Contrast Background and shaders. Players can enable a hero shader, enemy shader and adjust the background contrast too.
These various shader options will allow players to pick different colours for a range of objects. Bosses have one, enemies can have another. Even jump pads and wall running objects can be turned on. There’s even a collectable shader that will turn the Gold Bolts into a specific colour that stands out from everything else.
Following the praise in Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Games has developed the same custom game speed and shortcut feature into the Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart accessibility options. This allows players to quickly enable and disable a range of shader settings and speed up and slow down the game by using the D-Pad. Players can assign speeds of 70%, 50% or 30% to these shortcuts.
Insomniac Games says that this helps players slow things down when the game can feel overwhelming and they are required to press multiple buttons at once.
