The Resident Evil 2 remake has sold less than 10,000 copies on iOS, according to latest estimates. The award-winning survival horror game was ported to Apple’s store last December to a mostly lukewarm financial reception, passing $100,000 in in-app purchases since its launch.
The Resident Evil 2 remake is actually free on iOS, though it only gives players access to a very limited sample of the full game. Thereafter, players will need to spend $40 to unlock the full experience. However, in its first month, Capcom dropped that price to only $10. Despite the steep price drop, it didn’t win over a lot of players on iOS. According to Mobilegamer.biz, data from the mobile app tracking device Appmagic estimated that the remake just passed $100,000 in in-app purchases.
To break it down, Resident Evil 2 earned Capcom $95,000 within its first month (when the price was dropped to $10), meaning around 9,500 players purchased it. After the first month when the price was bumped up to $40, Appmagic estimates that around $7,000 was made, equating to an additional 175 players that bought it at full price. All of this brings the overall sales to less than 10,000 on iOS.
There are a few factors to take into account. Not every iOS device is capable or powerful enough to run the Resident Evil 2 remake. Additionally, most fans would’ve already played the game by now (and on another, more reliable gaming platform) since it has been out for six years at this point. Of course, the big issue is the price. $40 is a hefty ask for mobile gamers when most mobile games cost a fraction of that.
Back in July 2024, Capcom also suffered a hit when Resident Evil 7 launched on iOS to abysmal sales. We think it’s about time for Capcom to hang up its efforts of bringing the series to iOS if this is the trajectory it’s going to continue following.
In related news, Capcom is apparently bringing Resident Evil 6 to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S for some reason.
