The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has listed the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake as containing in-game purchases. Additionally, the game will also feature multiplayer of some kind, leading many to believe that the remake will also bring Mercenaries back. Capcom hasn’t officially announced it yet, though the mention of “in-game purchases” could mean a few things.
When players see a label for a game containing in-game purchases, it usually means that it will contain microtransactions of some kind. This is odd as newer Resident Evil titles, excluding the multiplayer spin-off games like Re:Verse, have shied away from including any intrusive microtransactions. Some fans on Reddit pointed out that the ESRB sometimes labels in-game purchases if the game simply contains a redirect to the store DLC page.

As for the multiplayer, fans believe that Capcom could be working on a Mercenaries mode for Resident Evil 4‘s remake. The original game included it, so it only makes sense that the remake may feature it as well. Capcom hasn’t officially said anything about a Mercenaries mode for the game yet. However, the developer recently included it in Resident Evil Village Gold Edition, which allows players to take on the roles of other characters from the game and fend off hordes of enemies.
In related news, Capcom previously confirmed that the Resident Evil 4 remake will dial down its quick-time events following new gameplay and details about the collector’s edition being revealed.
If you’ve already picked up Resident Evil Village Gold Edition, you’ll know that the Shadows of Rose DLC concludes the Winter family saga, leaving the next game a complete mystery about where it will go or who we’ll be playing as.
Resident Evil 4 releases on 24 March 2023 for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
