Resident Evil 9 Reveal Rumours Heat Up Ahead of Summer Game Fest

Resident Evil 9 rumours are starting to heat up again from multiple sources ahead of Summer Game Fest this Friday. Capcom already confirmed back in July 2024 that it was working on the next installment of its legendary horror franchise with Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi back at the helm. New rumours suggest that the company is gearing up to make the grand announcement at Geoff Keighley’s showcase very soon.

Screenfire Germany, which was the first outlet to talk about potential Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica remakes weeks before it gained traction, claims that Resident Evil 9 will finally be unveiled at Summer Game Fest with a release date targeting Q1 2026 (just in time for the 30th anniversary of the series).

Capcom leaker Dusk Golem offered some new information about the game shortly after, claiming that “9” won’t be in the title. They also claimed that it will have a “strong gothic horror atmosphere” and may feature multiple playable characters other than Leon S. Kennedy. Perhaps the biggest slice of information from the leaker suggests that it won’t be open-world like previous rumours claimed but rather feature large explorable areas.

MP1st corroborated the Resident Evil 9 reveal happening this week, though as some fans pointed out, it might not necessarily make an appearance at Summer Game Fest. Instead, there’s a good chance that Sony could host a new State of Play showcase this week where it will show up. Historically, most new mainline Resident Evil games have been revealed at Sony events so this checks out.

Capcom recently released Monster Hunter Wilds to great critical and financial success, quickly climbing to become one of the highest-selling video game of 2025. However, the company’s upcoming slate seems a bit empty so now’s a good opportunity to make some big announcements. As with all rumours and reports, take this with a pinch of salt for now.
