According to a new report from reliable source Dusk Golem, the upcoming Resident Evil 9 game is going to act as a whole new reinvention of the series. The source claims that Resident Evil 9 is going to be seen as a huge step in a different direction, similar to how Resident Evil 4 and 7 were.
If you can recall, Resident Evil 4 acted as quite the substantial evolution of the series. Prior to that game, previous titles featured a static camera system, less action, and had less focus on inventory. Resident Evil 4 expanded on everything we knew from the series while also introducing new mechanics.
Fast forward a bit, and we have Resident Evil 7. This game was the first RE title to not only take the series first-person but also introduced stealth and, of course, the VR support.
Dusk Golem claims that we’ll see a similar change in Resident Evil 9 as Capcom has created a game that is “not going to play like RE7/RE8 or the Remakes”. He claims that Resident Evil 9 is going to try new things and be a very ambitious game.
We can only guess where Capcom is taking the series from here. I suspect we might see RE9 take on an open-world setting as we saw Capcom experimenting with larger hubs in RE8. We don’t know if the studio will keep the series first-person, but given the success of the past two games, it is likely the case.
Dusk Golem claims that Capcom will announce Resident Evil 9 this year. By the sound of things, the game will be announced near the end of 2025 and released in early 2026. Previous reports claimed that the game will focus on Leon as the protagonist and is being directed by the Resident Evil 7 director.
