Resident Evil 4 Remake 12 Minutes New Gameplay

Resident Evil Movie Reboot Gets 2026 Release Date

The upcoming Resident Evil movie reboot from Barbarian writer and director Zach Cregger has been given a release date for next year. Viewers can expect the next live-action outing in the Resident Evil movie franchise to arrive on 18 September 2026.

Zach Cregger, who wrote and directed the acclaimed 2022 horror movie Barbarian, will direct and co-write the new Resident Evil movie with Shay Hatten, best known for working on the John Wick movies and its upcoming spin-off, Ballerina. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions will co-finance the project with Constantin Film, the same company that previously handled the distribution of the Milla Jovovich-centric movies as well as the 2021 reboot attempt, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

An older report from The Hollywood Reporter claimed that Cregger’s adaptation is “a revamp that will take the title to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games.” While that was technically attempted with Welcome to Raccoon City, the movie was panned for its rushed plot as it tried to squeeze the events of the first two games in the franchise into a condensed 90-minute movie.

This marks yet another attempt to adapt the Resident Evil games into a successful movie and potential franchise. Depending on who you ask, previous attempts weren’t very successful at staying true to the tone and style of the video games, instead focusing a bit too much on action and spectacle over what makes the series so great. However, in the hands of Cregger, who proved his mettle as a capable horror director already, there’s some hope that it will turn out good this time.

In related news, Capcom is currently hard at work on Resident Evil 9. Details on the anticipated sequel aren’t known yet, though previous reports claim that Leon S. Kennedy will be the protagonist of the game, closing the book on the Winters family saga from the previous two titles.

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie reboot has a release date of 18 September 2026.
