Apex Legends Respawn Entertainment 20 Years

Respawn Wants Apex Legends to Last for 20 Years

Apex Legends, the popular battle royale first-person shooter from Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment, is one of gaming’s biggest success stories. The free-to-play game immediately gained traction at launch and continued to draw in millions of players, largely thanks to its unique roster of characters, tight gameplay and exciting world-building and lore. Given this continued success, Respawn really wants Apex Legends to last for 20 years.

In an interview with IGN, Apex Legends senior design director Evan Nikolich compared the game to Counter-Strike, noting the game’s longevity and persistence. Counter-Strike has managed to stay in the spotlight for almost 23 years thanks to a devoted player base and the competitive esports scene. Nikolich wants Apex Legends to be a similar success and last for at least 20 years like Valve’s shooter.

Nikolich explained what he meant in the interview:

“Where we want to get to is that Apex is going to last for 20 years like Counter-Strike. It has to be able to be self-sufficient and stand on its own. The systems have to be strong and interesting and good for players to play season over season, even if we’re not adding new bespoke content.”

Respawn has continuously updated Apex Legends with new seasonal content, frequently making welcomed changes and adding new characters and gear. In the competitive scene, Apex Legends also built a lot of momentum over the years, resulting in massive tournaments across the globe. The developer suggests that even if content stops flowing for Apex Legends, it strongly believes that the player base will still be maintained year after year like Counter-Strike.

As far as battle royale games go, the market is currently flooded with options. However, alongside Fortnite, Apex Legends remains one of the go-to choices for players just entering the genre or wanting a fun change of pace.

Apex Legends is currently available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
