Respawn Will Ban “Piggy-Backing” Apex Legends Players

Respawn will not be taking “Piggy-Backing” lightly in Apex Legends and will soon be banning players who help their friends through matches by “carrying them”. Jayfresh, Respawn’s community manager spoke on Reddit about the situation and gave some feedback about the issues that are currently plaguing the game. According to Respawn, Piggy-Backing is “when a player drafts off other players in the squad to carry them to a good position and level up faster but doesn’t actually participate in the match [meaning they never collect a weapon, fire a shot, don’t deal any damage, etc].

Respawn announced that they will begin issuing temporary bans for players that exhibit piggy-backing behaviour and will even hand out perma-bans for extreme cases. Although, they did not reveal when this will begin.

Piggy-Backing in gaming is nothing new and a lot of players do it in a lot of games. It seems that it is affecting the flow of matches in Apex Legends as these players are not participating in the combat or experience in the game at all, rather just standing by while their friends play through the match to earn XP for them.

Respawn will no doubt track this by detecting whether or not you actually do anything in the match which will force players to actually start making an effort even if they are being “piggy-backed”. It seems you are on your own if you are trying to get into the game now but then again, Respawn should focus some attention on matchmaking new players with other new players to fair out the playing field.
