AMD has just released the new Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT GPUs, and they are pretty incredible. For $549 (or around R14,500), they deliver some fantastic 4K performance and, if anything, outperform the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti, which are priced higher. It is like these new AMD Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs are almost too good to be true. Well, it might be the case.
According to multiple retailers, the asking price for these new GPUs won’t remain at the steal RRP for long. Sources claim that AMD will end up increasing the price, and $549 is just a “launch special” that covers the first shipments of the card.
Retailers say the GPU will go up to around $800 in the coming months. Although we don’t know if this is just for the XT or non-XT model. Multiple retailers have seemingly confirmed this news, saying this is what they have heard internally from AMD.
It kind of makes sense. AMD was originally meant to launch the Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT earlier this year but suddenly delayed the release following NVIDIA’s 50-series rollout. I suspect the delay was to adjust the price and release plan to undercut NVIDIA. I think these AMD GPUs were originally meant to release at a much higher price point, and this $549 is just to get all the best exposure as possible.
Retailers say that once this first allocation of GPUs runs out, the next delayed batch will come in at a higher MSRP. We’ll keep you updated on what these prices look like once they arrive. Right now, the usual stock problems have hit the AMD 9000-Series GPUs with virtually no stock available at retailers.
This is partly due to scalpers while, at the same time, high demand. The card has sold incredibly well in South Africa. My local retailer sources say the GPUs sold out within 7 minutes across certain stores.
